I had a great creative shoot fall into my lap on short notice. I've always wanted to photograph a tattoo shop and I was contacted by the owner of Broken Clover here in Tucson to shoot group photos and headshots for an editorial feature in Pain magazine.
My favorite thing to do is to go into a shoot sight unseen and quickly build a rapport with my subjects and produce interesting and compelling images of people I've just met. Working with fellow creatives is an even bigger bonus as I love working with people who have a craft that I can portray in images.
I photographed 10 artists and 2 apprentices in an hour and this portrait was one of my favorites.
Shot with a 5Dmk3 and 24 1.4 mk2 L. I love to shoot portraits with a 24mm lens as it's not your conventional portrait lens, but it really helps me convey a sense of environment.
Einstein camera left with a 28" fotodiox white beauty dish and grid. Speedlight camera right with a MagMod grid. Shooting with grids is relatively new for me. I've really come to appreciate tighter light spread and being able to pin point where I want light to fall.
Settings were 1/200, f2, ISO 160. Main light was set to around 40 watt seconds and the speedlight was set to around 1/32nd power.
