"Hi my name is Tom Halliday, a commercial wedding photographer from Cambridge, UK. For the past year I have been rebuilding my site, scrapping it and starting again. 9 to 5 I am Head of Photography at a branding agency, so I know about the importance of brand and getting it right. Hence the many revisions. I’m finally happy with the site and it’s going live on Friday.
I shot this image for my ‘About Me’ page. It features my son Noah, myself and my wife Nell. I didn't want the normal sit, turn and smile, or to do the super-cheesy ‘photographer-holding-camera’ shot. I wanted to show my family’s personality. It’s a combination of 5 shots. The camera was placed on my tripod and the laptop set centre. I made a new blank document in Photoshop to create the white glow. I left on the light in the two adjacent rooms in my house and left the doors open to allow a bit of fill light.
I positioned Noah on the table (my wife held his back because he moves fast for an 8 month old!) and shot about 10 frames to get the correct pose and expression.
Then Nell and I sat there with the mugs of tea while I controlled the camera with a Trigmaster plus II. Next, I laid all my gear out in front of the Mac and did two shots, one with the same 1/50 exposure and one at 1/5 so I could do a slight HDR effect on the gear. I color corrected each shot in Lightroom, stacked them in Photoshop and masked the parts I wanted. By cleaning up the background I removed the pictures and paintings on our wall and added the steam to the mugs using Screen.
Finally I re-imported it to Lightroom, toned the image and added a slight grain. The finished result is exactly what I set out to achieve and I’m really happy with it." -
