"This image was shot early one morning on the east coast of Oahu just after sunrise. I had worked with the model before, and she knew a local designer who made feather headdresses (they call them mohawks). Her work is popular with the Burning Man crowd. We chose a couple of the mohawks and set off from Honolulu, arriving at the location just in time to catch the sunrise.
It was a windy day, and I was aware that the best angle for the design was in profile. I tried a number of angles, shooting into and with the sun, with and without strobe. I like to play with lens flare for a few images at least, whenever I get the chance. Different lenses have different flare characteristics, and the 24-70 creates the most interesting and colorful ones in my experience. I brought up the shadows a little in post so we can see more details of the feathers, but otherwise the image is pretty much as shot." -Kaveh Kardan
