"The photo comes from a series that I just recently completed, which is titled "True Obsession". The series is inspired by the new HBO series, "True Detective", and, more specifically, it is heavily inspired by the show's opening credits.
What you see here is actually an in-camera triple exposure that I achieved with a Canon 5D MKiii. I then took the single compiled frame and processed it/cleaned it up in PS. This consisted of some slight cleanup to the original image as well as adding textures and toning.
The settings for the three shots consist of a first exposure, which was taken by my wife of me in our studio. I was essentially backlit by two Alien Bee b800s that were situated camera left and camera right. The settings for that shot were f/9, ISO 400, and Shutter Speed of 1/200. The second exposure was of the train yards in my hometown of Joplin, Missouri. The settings for that frame were f/2.8, ISO 400, and a shutter speed of 1/1000. For the final exposure, I traveled about 40 minutes south of Joplin to a cemetery in Seneca, MO, and took a shot of a headstone that was topped with a cross. The settings were f/2.8, ISO 400, and a shutter speed of 1/2500 of a second.
It should also be noted that I used a black business card to cover portions of the lens, so only the areas of the base frame (shot of me) would be exposed and evident in the accumulation of images together." - Aaron & Whitney DuRall (DuRall Photography)
