And then there’s the lack of a rear screen, which seems bold at first but soon feels liberating. Instead of fiddling with settings or chimping your shots, you’re free to focus entirely on the scene in front of you, further extending a slower approach to your photography.
The camera is a solid, masterful piece of craftsmanship and exudes this while at the same time being humbly unnoticeable in its 540 g body.
Performance
Underneath its vintage-inspired exterior, the Leica M11-D is a modern marvel. Its 60 MP full frame sensor delivers impeccable detail and dynamic range. Whether you're capturing at 60, 36, or 18 MP, the 256 GB internal storage provides you with plenty of space. This inbuilt storage feature is something I wish more manufacturers would adopt. With a native ISO of 64 to ISO 50,000, you are able to capture subtle textures in any lighting environment. Whether it’s city streets or capturing portraits, the resulting image quality is nothing short of breathtaking.
Using the camera feels refreshingly different. Instead of a rear LCD, you rely on the rangefinder for composition; more on that later. Images can be reviewed via Leica's Fotos app, with settings adjusted on both the camera and app. This creates a seamless workflow for those who embrace the analog-digital hybrid approach. This is not a camera for hurried shooting; it’s for those who want to immerse themselves in the process, one deliberate frame at a time.

Is a Rangefinder for Everyone?

I’m incredibly grateful to Leica for allowing me to review the M11-D, as I was thoroughly impressed by the thoughtful attention to detail that defines this model. However, I did find myself struggling with the rangefinder for reasons that are entirely personal and not reflective of the camera’s design. Let me explain.
Rangefinders offer a unique way of visualizing your composition. Unlike electronic viewfinders, which show you only the contents of your frame, rangefinders give you a view of what’s happening just outside of it. This feature allows you to anticipate a moment, like tracking a person walking into your frame so you can capture them at the perfect spot. With an EVF, you’re limited to what’s within the frame and left hoping your subject doesn’t change direction before they enter your sh
For me, though, it wasn’t so simple. Due to my prescription eyesight, I needed to wear a specific contact lens in my non-dominant eye to use the rangefinder effectively. This wasn’t an issue with the camera itself—it’s entirely my personal limitation—but it’s something worth mentioning for anyone with similar visual needs. My advice? If you wear prescription glasses or contacts, make sure to try a rangefinder system in person before investing.
Of course, Leica being Leica, they’ve anticipated the needs of photographers who might prefer an electronic viewfinder. They offer an optional EVF accessory that attaches to the M11-D, giving users a more familiar and modern shooting experience. I didn’t have the chance to test the EVF alongside the camera, but I wish I had, as it might have been a better fit for my shooting style. While I admire the rangefinder approach, I’ve come to realize that it’s not for me.
Final Thoughts
The Leica M11-D is more than a camera; it’s an encapsulated creative philosophy in a magnesium and aluminum all-metal housing, with a scratch-resistant finish. By stripping away modern distractions, Leica has crafted a tool that demands presence, intention, and patience. They've stripped away the advantages of a digital camera to give it the "feeling" of an analog camera? That's like taking the seatbelts, stereo, and air conditioner out of a modern car to give it the "feeling" of a classic car.
Film cameras are never love letters to digital cameras...
Some people do appreciate the stripped back approach though. No screen, no menus getting in the way, no features they'd never use, just like taking photos with a film camera but with the advantage of digital files over film. Some people will go for that, many others won't. We all have different preferences when it comes to cameras.
I admit though the M11-D is very niche and VEEEERY expensive.
I can understand the wish to get back to the very basics necessary, but why must it be tied to feeling like/being an homage to something it isn't? I know it's a personal bugaboo, but I'm always amused by digital photography pretending it's really just like analog photography. I see lots of articles on "shoot digital just like film" and "how to make your digital photographs look like film photographs", but I never see articles on "how to make your film photographs look like digital photographs".

Precisely like that. Like Morgan or Caterham, to use a car analogy. And I like it. I like that Leica had the guts to make this camera. Without it, the world would be a much more boring place.
I want this camera. I never look at the back screen on my cameras once I've taken the shot, so this is perfect.
I began my photo career in 1970. I had a studio. We shot 2 1/4, 4x5 and 8x10 film.
You only had a few shots. Even 35 mm, you had 24 or 36 shots. We ran a very successful business. Photography was about lighting, texture and exposure which we had to learn. One shot. Correct lighting. Correct exposure. There was no fixing in photo programs. In 1996 we were early in digital. No screens those cameras. We had a successful transition. The screens and memory just made it easy especially after 30 years of experience.
It is not obvious regarding the history of pre- and post-production. (If I'm correct).
Initially, before shooting, it was convenient to use a light meter to accurately determine exposure. Everything was done manually before automation arrived.
The name Photoshop originates from the darkroom era, where specialists performed the same tasks as the program now: masking, adjusting exposure and contrast, cropping, dodging and burning, etc.
Now, this is done with a stylus instead of by hand—faster and cheaper, provided proper lighting, composition, and exposure are utilized, of course.
And to make it more difficult and awkward. 4x5 and 8x10 with a cloth over your head and the image upside down and backwards.
I work primarily with an 8x10 camera in wet plate. "Awkward" is a subjective feeling. Fumbling through multiple menus, chimping a half-dozen variations, then fixing eveything in Photoshop seems awkward to me.

I LOVE my M10-D but Leica didn't give me any reason to upgrade. I don't care about high megapixels for the type of shooting I do with this camera. It's about the experience of shooting, and rangefinder focus isn't exactly ideal for maximizing sharpness, anyway. I would have LOVED a stabilized 24 MP sensor, though, because there's nothing fun about camera shake.
Camera shake isn't a problem once you learn what shutter speeds to use with your chosen focal length. 🙂
Yeah, I'm familiar with this concept, but sensor stabilization and longer shutter speeds can improve image quality by allowing me to use lower ISOs. It also provides more creative freedom by allowing me to use a long shutter speed to show subject movement, like photographing a merry-go-round.
My other Leica camera before the M11-D is the M11 (traded in for the M11-D) and M262 (which I still own), if I was able to obtain either the M262-D or M10-D, I wouldn't have bothered with the M11-D either.
But since I couldn't find one, the M11-D is the only choice and I personally think the M11 is the best Leica to date and the D variant makes it that much more special.
I have an M10 too, and none of the M11 cameras tempt me either. TBH, this is one of the things I love about Leicas—they’re more timeless than one would expect from digital cameras. I’m sure my M10 will still be taking great photos 10 years from now. And the main limiting factor in my photography will be my skill (or lack thereof), not my Leica.
