Fstoppers Original: Peter Hurley's The Art Behind The Headshot Is Live

Peter Hurley: The Art Behind The Headshot is finally available. Peter Hurley, one of the most successful and well known headshot photographers of all time has teamed up with Fstoppers to produce a 4 hour tutorial exposing all of his tips and tricks that he has learned over the past 8 years as a professional photographer. This video touches on all aspects of running a successful photography business but Peter's main goal is to teach the average person about the subtleties of the human face so that you can make any human in front of your camera look interesting.

Peter Hurley spent the early part of his life traveling the world as a professional male model. During that time Peter was photographed by some of the top fashion photographers in the world. As a model Peter was forced to understand the subtle movements of his own face but he was also able to learn the technical side of photography from some of the best in the world. Peter moved to New York city and saw a nitch in the market that he thought he could fill. "I thought that if I could shoot actors headshots like commercial photographers shot celebrities I could be successful." Over the past 8 years Peter has become what many argue is the top headshot photographer in the world.

In this 4 hour tutorial Peter reveals everything that he uses to produce not just technically sound but "interesting" images day in and day out. Although this video does touch on a number of topics, this tutorials main focus is on coaching those in front of your camera into producing the best possible images. We have also decided to bring this "DVD" to you as a digital download so you can enjoy Peter's lessons in 720 HD resolution without having to have a Bluray player! This video is suggested for those who are already professional photographers who want to take their portraits to the next level.

"I really enjoyed, and learned a lot by watching Peter interact with his subjects, which is really an art unto itself. He is fantastic at making his subjects feel relaxed and comfortable, which lets him draw expression and emotions out of his subjects that make a big difference. This alone was worth it for me."

--Scott Kelby, Author, The Digital Photography Book Series

"If you are a headshot or portrait photographer, this is a must-have DVD, and will enable you to immediately take better pictures." Read Entire Review Here

"If you haven’t seen Peter’s DVD I highly suggest it mainly to watch how he interacts with his subjects. He’s a master at that!"

congratulations guys... looks like a LOT of hard work and $300 is reasonable... I am def going to try to make this purchase.

Lee Morris's picture

Thanks Robbie. I hope you enjoy it!

Peter Kertz's picture

Lee...I went to Peter's first headshot intensive and this was included in the package. Where can I download this? Thanks!

Jason Peters's picture

This DVD covers my one of my big weak spots. That being said, 4 and a half hours left on this download...

Lee Morris's picture

Not only was this a weak spot for me, it was non existent in my shooting before I filmed this. Even while filming this Peter was so over my head because I've never modeled and never thought about this stuff. It took days before I started to get it and it may take you watching it a few times before it really starts to sink in. Keep an open mind, it's very different than your average photography tutorial.

Completely brilliant, really glad you guys made this. It was worth the sheer time spent putting it together.

Hi guys, great teaser for the dvd... looks really great. Nonetheless do you think it would be possible to have short exerpts to see the real content and not the whole marketing pitch behind it? Don't get me wrong, no criticism as i feel that part is really well done, but bits of the real thing make it clear to us future customers :)

thanks a lot,

Patrick Hall's picture

Every shot you see in the promo besides Lee and I are from the tutorial. You should be able to get an idea oh the type of content from watching Peter in this promo....only we've saved the best stuff for the full download

Patrick Hall's picture

We didn't mention this but you can see it in the promo, the Tutorial has interviews with Peter about business and photography questions, 7 full sessions with real paying clients, Peter commentary about what is REALLY happening during those sessions, post session recaps, and finally a full length tutorial on how to achieve Peter Hurley lighting with Kino Flos as well as 3 other Strobe light alternative setups including one with only one light and no modifiers!  Hope that helps

I think i'll just put myself on hold until next paycheck, that's coming in soon :D. You guys might have time to do the minor edits discussed below (is that something you are considering on a long or short term).

To be honest, i'm in for the 300$, I do enjoy (even if i only watch online) having a DVD or something hardcover with a box, kind of palpable... and i'm still a techno geek so it's kind of sick.

I think it's a great idea for apple Itunes, and even for amazon etc. it's all a question of margin over quantity :).

Anyone from europe downloaded ? how's the download situation from here ?

Thanks for your feedback, and what's in the DVD. I think that should go in your initial post as it's a seller in itself with the teaser video.

Danvil's picture

If you are a pro, you wouldn't hesitate to spend the $300. on a piece of equipment, if you thought you'd make your money back in the next 18-24 months, would you? So, if you like his style and you think he's been successful, why try to cut corners on the most important product you can invest in, yourself?

Nicholas Gonzalez's picture

Incredible! This will probably be the most important DVD I will ever purchase. It reaffirms the importance of a photographer to know that a good image depends on the photographer, not the gear. I can't wait!

Chris Blizzard's picture

It looks like exactly what I've been wanting.   There are enough tutorials on the basics of lighting that it's pretty easy to figure out, but interacting with your subject, and making them look their best still eludes me.

It's a little out of my budget at the moment, but I hope it sells well for you.   Maybe one day my budget for these kinds of things will go up, at which point this will be one of my first stops.

Great teaser !! ... I can see people rushing
into their Paypal accounts

I shouldn't. But i'm gonna buy it. Why? One: I love the work of Peter Hurley. Two: I already learned so much in here for free, that it seems only fair.

Thx guys!

the best chrismas gift... for myself jajaja

great job guys, YOU ROCK!

Sebastian Lee's picture

Looking forward to buying this DVD.  I'm sure there is a lot to learn from this and also purely to help support this site.  What format is the DVD?  Can I resume a download?  I'm overseas and don't have the most stable internet connection.  Thanks guys!

Lee Morris's picture

It is 2, 2gb files and you can resume each one up to 5 times over the course of 48 hours. If you have any issues at all we can renew your download time.

Sebastian Lee's picture

Thanks Lee.  Purchased!

You guys need to include this dvd in the behind the scenes contest!

Patrick Hall's picture

Not a bad idea....hopefully that isn't all that's keeping you from entering though :)

Nope its not, I'm gonna make it as informative as possible!
I'm gonna make a serie about uniform jobs, already shot 4 mechanics and 4 fire fighters, both filmed!
Hopefully I'm going to shoot 4 divers this sunday!
Hope you guys are looking forward too my edit. :)

could be a price for he top 10 ;)

Marcos Mtz. de Irujo's picture

I am thinking to buy the DVD.
Still available the 300$ discount coupon for the workshops?

Lee Morris's picture

No I'm sorry that is only for those who pre-ordered and they really deserved it because we thought this video would have been released months ago. They have been extremely patient while we finished this thing up.

Marcos Mtz. de Irujo's picture

Thanks!

What format are the files?  Are they DVD video or quicktime?

Patrick Hall's picture

mp4 video

thanks!

Nick Shek's picture

I can't wait to watch this! The most expensive DVD I have ever bought but hopefully also the most rewarding. I would've preferred a hard copy though...

The audio sounds great on every system we have played it on.  Every now and then you get some rustling from the lav mics or a random low pop noise but that's expected when filming a live photoshoot.

Edit: I'm speaking of the full version, not the promo Lee addressed below

Lee Morris's picture

It is clipping in parts on the promo because I edited in a compressed version of the DVD and raised the levels to match the interview. It doesn't clip in the full dvd.

Hey Lee is it possible to get a code to download the video so i can review for http://www.photographySILO.com i think my readers would love to learn about it. To get an idea of the quality of my reviews check out the review i did for Lowepro's PR Agency http://photographysilo.com/product-review/lowepro-photo-sport-200-aw/ Thanks in advance!

Let's Go DSLR's picture

I'm one of those hobbyists mentioned in the main post, but I enjoyed that trailer and actually learnt something from it.

Also, Peter Hurley is such a Dude.

Patrick Hall's picture

the truth of the matter is Lee and I both know some amazing photographers who only consider themselves hobbyists (some take better photos than many pros I know).  I would say that if you want to improve the photos you take of people and have the money (as an investment or simply as a hobby), you will not be disappointed by this DVD.  Some of it might be over your head if you haven't mastered the basics but anytime you get to learn directly from a top professional in his field I don't think you can ever say it wasn't worth being there.

Ronald Stewart's picture

I really wished I had held off on buying the Life Finders DVD for just a couple weeks. I'm still in college so that obviously set me back a bit. I can't wait to get this DVD, I love all of his work.

$300 !!

Ronald Stewart's picture

Information is priceless

what kind of portrait photographer doesn't direct their model..  and charge $300 for it? get out of here.

Jeremy Lusk's picture

They're charging $300 for 4 hours of insights from a guy who charges $1200 for his sessions. This sort of investment pays for itself very quickly.

Lee & Pat it looks like you guys did a fantastic job with this.

Chris Blizzard's picture

I'm sure most do, but are they getting everything they can out of the model?   If you don't know what pose will wuit them, how can you pose them?   What do you look for?   It may be out of my budget, but I'd say it'd probably be worth the money at double the price.

Mike Palangio's picture

WANT THIS!!!! Just finish up paying for the bazillion other things that being a full time photography student entails. Maybe this will be a graduation gift to myself. Great work to everyone involved.

Deep J singh's picture

Lee PLEASE put it on iTunes! will buy it Right-Away! I love the convenience of being able to download the purchase even after years just in-case you loose it.

Lee Morris's picture

We will look into it although I'm sure that Apple wants a huge commission.

Duncan Bell's picture

Part One download is a disaster at 14hrs, Part Two whistled down in parallel at 1.5hours.  One interrupted P1 download wouldn't allow continuation at about 80% so I had to restart.....14 hours to go.  Urgh.

Really looking forward to the content though and the above is only a reflection on the delivery of the product.

Lee Morris's picture

Send us an email at contactfstoppers@gmail.com and well help you out.

Duncan Bell's picture

Appreciate it Lee but I left it going all night and some of the next morning and it's now all in.  It was just weird as part 2 was downloading literally 10 times faster?  Getting stuck into the content tonight, can't wait!

John Dunne's picture

While I am not in the market for this type of material I do want to congratulate both of you and wish you every success.
