Fabiola Jean-Louis
Fabiola Jean-Louis is a Haitian born, New York and Brooklyn raised mixed media artist currently living, mothering and creating in the same beautiful city. As a little girl growing up in New York, Fabiola was surrounded by art and fascinating characters. Scenes such as the gothic/industrial, punk, rave, and squatter all played a role in her adolescent life. Her participation in the “underground” simultaneously made her aware that she was one of the few black girls among her peers and within the scenes who found such a deep connection to unconventional society.
During this time, Fabiola reflected on the contributions of her ancestors to folklore, science/technology, philosophy and more while, she noted that these achievements were seemingly disregarded by society. Also, upon conducting research on black magical creatures and storytelling, she remarked the absence of photographs which depicted any such thing. It then became her goal to not only reflect her Afro-Caribbean culture through her creative work but, to also express the influences of black contribution to American and European History, as well as preserve the beauty and magic of her people through the medium of photography.
