I have a career in medicine but I shoot for fun. My friends always tell me my work is "pro" but I don't shoot for the money. For me, when I shoot for pay, it begins to feel like work & sucks the fun out of it. Occassionally, I shoot family/friends that requested me but mostly, I usually shoot for me. As a result, I shoot whatever I want whenever I feel like it rather than be stuck with a client. I'm a humble photographer & would never consider myself better than anyone. However, if I had to label myself, then I would consider myself a highly experienced Enthusiast or Hobbyist Photographer critical of her photos who is still growing & improving.
I mostly shoot for myself. Every photo I take for fun, I take thinking, "will I like it?" and not "how many people will like this?" My audience is me, I shoot for myself. I'm a pixel peeper at times & I'm a bokeh whore the other times.
I believe that the SOOC image is just as important as the edit (in most cases). From color to lighting, my edited images must all look natural/realistic even if it's a composite.
Ultimately, gear is very important to me for two reasons: Creativity & Quality.
When I want my creative juices flowing, I combine my Fujifilm X-Pro1 or Sony a7 with my Minolta 58mm f/1.2 ... and magic happens.
However, when shooting stuff I love (beautiful landscapes & people), I use quality glass. Bokeh & sharpness are the most important specs for anything 35mm & up.
