Jon Owen
After the death of my father in 2012, I made a New Year's goal to find a new creative outlet in 2013. Looking back, I think the goal was maybe to process grief, or maybe even avoid it. I signed up for a photography class taught by a friend from church. He was a fantastic teacher and made things easy to understand and fun to learn. He's still a great teacher and mentor, long after the class has ended.
I guess I got lucky because people liked the shots I was taking.
I love rich colors to pop. I enjoy portrait work, but also love sports photography.
I try to avoid posing people, though sometimes you just have to start somewhere. I want to capture personalities of the subjects. That's why I enjoy family portraits with hyper kids. :)
I try to avoid the word "smile" in a session. It's the dirty "S" word. If I can't make you smile naturally, you will just look like a robot and robots don't take great pictures.
