Matt Ellis
I've been an amateur for over 20 years, and am fortunate to be able to travel with my spouse. We hike and I shoot for myself, what pleases me. I carry a ton of gear and water on day hikes. I don't care about the weight just the enjoyment of having what I want with me when I want it. I upgrade when I feel my equipment is limiting me from what I am trying to achieve. My primary photography is landscapes with a telephoto lens - what I can't capture with a smartphone, so what is different from the millions of pictures on the web. I use a Canon R7 with a couple pro lenses and DxO, because again, I am fortunate to have that option. Then again, many people spend more on sports equipment or season tickets in a year than all my photography equipment has cost me over twenty. And, when I'm laying down the thousands of dollars to visit a place like New Zealand once, it seems silly not to have bought that better lens that I'll own for a decade and more.
