How To Create A Scary Photograph With No Budget

Happy Halloween everyone! Today we decided to create a super simple, creepy image with some basic equipment. With 2 lights, a gel, smoke, a cardboard box, and some quick Photoshop we were able to create something almost anyone could easily reproduce.

Once again Chelsey played our lovely model but this time we needed her to look a little less lovely. To create some fake blood Chelsey used corn syrup, chocolate syrup, and red food dye.

For lighting we only used 2 speedlights. The first speedlight was a bare head placed below Chelsey firing up at here to create sinister looking up lighting.

For the back light we taped a red gel for some color and then we added our fog machine to add a bit more dimension to the background. If you don't have a fog machine you could easily create some smoke by lighting matches and then blowing them out. Dust or flour floating in the air would also do the trick.

Finally we added a "gobo" (go between) in the form of a cardboard box between the flash and Chelsey. The hard light firing through the star shaped box was able to create some really interesting lighting effects with the smoke.

In Photoshop I used a few layers masks and blending modes to make it look like Chelsey's skin was falling off.

The finished product is something that anyone could pull off in a few hours with minimal effort and gear.

Good technique on camera... not so well in post!

Stop having so much fun in the office or hire me and bring my ass down there. One or the other, I don't much care which. ;)

I just take photos of the Mother in law and get same results.
