Real or Fake? Image of Canon 135mm f/1.8

An image has surfaced of a Canon 135mm f/1.8 L IS lens, and it is a gorgeous creature. Though there is supposedly a patent placed by Canon for a 135mm, is this the lens or just an excellent rendering?

It seems that most of the Canon folk out there agree this is a fake, but you have to admit, it’s a pretty darn good one if it is. What matters is what you think though. If you think it’s real, sound off! If you think it’s fake, tell us what has led you to that conclusion. Click the image below for a larger version.

Nikon filed a patent in Japan for a 135mm f/1.8 earlier this year too. I could care less about the Canon, but I am crossing my fingers for the Nikon version to be out sometime next year :-)

It’s obviously a fake, the the text around the front of the lens isn’t quite right and the curve of it doesn’t quite match up with the curve of the red ring. the rest of it is very good and could easily be thought of as real.

              • http://twitter.com/EttVenter Ett Venter

Yep, Adam’s right. The text at the front of the lens is a dead giveaway.

it could actually be real as canon is focusing more towards video and prime IS lenses. i won’t be surprised if canon announces this lens soon.

Totally agree, its easy to see thats fake because of the text…

Snob…kidding. Nikon does have better glass then canon but canon kicks ass on the video front so what you gunna do…

This could very well just be a production mockup, I suppose they would make some before going into production? Plus, it’s already patented, so maybe … I like the look, so I’m crossing my fingers.

Nikon makes good wideangles, and Canon makes good telephotos – I don’t think you can say that one entire lineup is better than another.

I think this very well could be true. The texture and color matches other lenses that have recently been released, including the 24-70 f/2.8L II. I owned the 135L and absolutely loved the images it produced, though I did wish it had IS for general portraiture. If this 135 f/1.8L IS comes out, I would buy it ASAP!

The text looks wrong. And the lens is way too small to be IS and to be 1.8. As much as I wish it was real, this just looks like a digital creation.

Real or fake, the original 135L rules.

I would jump ship from Nikon just to use a lens like this. Bokehlicious!!!!!

In addition to the text alignment problem, the “L” is far too saturated to be printed on the optic.
