Tom Guilmette Plays With The Phantom HD

We have all heard about and seen footage from the Phantom camera. This thing can shoot amazing slomo at 1050fps at 1080p. I, however, have never actually seen the camera itself before. Tom takes us through a quick tutorial, because we will probably never get to touch one ourselves. Is anyone else shocked by the terrible navigation on this camera? For the price you would think they could add a D-pad and LCD.

More gratuitous slow-motion water shots. Meh!

“Is anyone else shocked by the terrible navigation on this camera?” No not really, this is typical of professional movie cameras.

The most FPS I’ve been involved with was 300 for an EFX shot in StarTrek the Movie, and another one for Goldie and the Boxer that ended-up being step printed down to 96 FPS, because 300 FPS was too long and boring.

Awesome. What does it cost to rent one of these bad boys?

Craig Zarkos asked. What does it cost to rent one of these bad boys?

$2,500.00 for the camera body, plus more money for the recorder and the lens, etc. Not inexpensive. Abel Cine Tech and Panavision rent them.

“What does it cost to rent one of these bad boys?”

you can get it for less. Unfortunately abelcine requires a certified operator with it (from your area) which most likely adds $500+/day to any shoot.

The camera is awful to work with. The software is a nightmare as well. We had to reboot the thing multiple times, had purple banding at times, and other issues. The workflow is also tricky (gamma). I eventually settled on using adobe lightroom for the entire color grading and got fantastic results

I had the change to use this camera in a studio setting and it was amazing. Needed an almost ridiculous amount of light though. Thanks for the vid.
