Instagram Introduces New Way to Save Others' Photos, Though It's Been Available for Years Already

Today Instagram adds a feature that allows you to pin, or save, others posts within the app to view them later. This allows you to create a well curated section of photos you have liked or wanted to reference back to later. Something many have done for years now is simply screen captured the image and hidden it away to a folder on their camera roll. I have no idea if this is as widely wanted as they pitch but here is why I think its important for the future of the platform.

Instagram started as a simple photo sharing platform and has grown to the giant that it is today, with very minimal but well thought out features that bring life over time rather than in big jumps. It's a similar plan to what Apple has done for years with simple additions that aren't ground breaking but work well and fit within the brand and their market. Being able to save photos to a collection is a nice little touch especially for us photographers who are always looking for inspiration and wanting to track images of a specific type or style for reference later. I personally have always screen grabbed it and created a folder in my camera roll to find them later.

For those diehard Instagram addicts this feature has actually been part of the app for years. I have used it in many cases to remember what photos I found appealing and liked. Though it is buried in the settings it still been accessible to everyone for a very long time, the only difference is they have added it on the front news feed in the form of a little black bookmark icon as you can see above.

Here is the way I have done it for years, it's a bit of a hack but works the exact same way and I don't have to search for the little bookmark icon. Simply like the photo and it's saved in the settings under "posts you've liked."

What do you guys think? Have you ever wanted this type of feature to save photos for later? Or have you been using the hack I have shown above already for years? Love to hear what you think!

I'm the same as you...if I really like it I screen shot it to save for later inspiration and as I by product if I "really like it" it's saved in my "posts I've liked". Not sure how useful this will be, unless they plan to remove the "posts I've liked portion.

I have been using "posts I've liked" to reference to an older picture I have liked. And usually screenshot and send an image through messages if I want to show someone a picture.

I guess Instagram is just trying to keep tabs on what everyone is liking, sharing, and storing.

The only way I can see this work is if its just for quick reference and quickly unpin it when you are done. I can see this space getting cluttered really quick.

For one, the "posts I've liked" has a short term memory, so that "hack" is a fail.

Also I like the idea of have a separate "favorites" vs just shots I've liked. I screen shot a lot of post for this reason. Now i don't have to!

I'm all about the screenshot for later reference

The best thing about Instagram was that it didn't have all of this clutter. You saw things as they were posted, who liked you photos when they liked them and so on. I have been thinking for the last 4 months or so that they must have the next big thing already because they are making Instagram suck intentionally.

Its a good thing for people who automate their likes. This way you can distinguish human likes from automated likes.

I have used "screenshotter" to be able to find screenshots of Instagram on my now uncontrollably large photostream so I appreciate this feature.

Kind of a side note, but has anyone else noticed that IG isn't allowing follower info to be used on third party applications anymore? I use Iconosquare for analytics, and now the ability to see who follows & unfollows you is no longer accessable...

One way means you have to scroll through dozens, hundreds, or thousands of pictures that you've liked at an unknown time in the past and *hope* that you can spot it in the grid, and the other way means you that you can (hopefully) more easily find pictures that you have specifically saved which may only be a handful instead of potentially thousands.

One you have control over and can use to mark pictures you may want to come back to later when you have more time to comment on, to explore the user's account, to explore the location, to make a temporary collection for a trip or project you are planning, etc. The other gives you no control. Not the same.

The like button only works if you "like" ONLY what you actually like. If youre like me and like all your friends pictures and just spread the love then you end up liking a bajillion pictures and it doesnt work as a save feature. The bookmark is perfect for this. Now I dont have to screenshot. Check out my IG and follow. @rolandoslens I would appreciate it. Ill follow back too if you let me know.
