Exploring a Feature Rich Environment for Landscape Photography

Some natural environments are filled with interesting and unique compositions for landscape photographers. It can be like being a kid on a playground. How do you make sense of it all and distill the scenes down to images for your portfolio?

We follow Nigel Danson in this video as he explores a landscape in Scotland. With mountains forming the backdrop and a winding stream with many small water features providing foreground elements, Danson walks the viewer through the landscape with his commentary on his approach.

Danson works through several compositions in this environment, composing scenes with the stream and working with the trees in the midground and the snow-covered mountain in the distance. Danson talks through his compositions, explaining what he is trying to do with each image, as well as effectively using a wide angle lens, the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8, for his compositions.

The video concludes with an in-office review of several images, with Danson providing additional insight into what worked for an image and what did not. I know I often find that something I thought worked well in the field doesn’t look as great when reviewing it in the office! I also appreciated the wide angle lens usage tips during the video, as I think this type of lens is more challenging than most people realize.
