Seattle's Day of Photography - Long Shot Photo Contest

Seattle's Day of Photography - Long Shot Photo Contest

Seattle's Mayor, Edward B. Murray, has proclaimed this day, June 19th, DAY OF PHOTOGRAPHY! The Photographic Center Northwest (PCNW) is holding their annual photo competition, Long Shot, where photographers from all over the world can submit their best images shot today.  For just 20 bucks, you can register and enter up to five submissions, where a panel of judges will rate your images.  Each Long Shot participant will have one image selected from their submissions, which will be printed and hung in the gallery showing on Sunday.

I don't think this contest is something professionals or semi professionals vie for. But then I realized, the real spirit of this "competition" is to spread a love of photography. Photography can be such a powerful tool, it spans across the world, and transcends language. It is a way for people to say, this is what our world looked like, and we were important. As photographers, we can get annoyed with people who purchase cameras, or edit their photos in iPhoto, and claim themselves photographers. Really, as a community we should welcome people to express their artistic side through this powerful medium of art. This contest would be great for younger photographers, when I first started, I would have loved for my work to be critiqued and hung in a gallery. A gallery showing, is a gallery showing, right? Registration is open to everyone all over the world, and submissions will be taken until June 20th, 12pm PST. If you are in the Seattle area, PCNW is hosting different events all weekend long. You can watch the video of last years winners to see the kind of photography that was submitted. More mayors should have proclamations supporting photography, so Mayor Murray, I salute you sir!

I live here and I didn't even know about this! Hoping the clouds break up and we get some sunshine!

For just $20 means, donate $20. No thanks.
