Learn How to Create a Quick DIY Reflector to Improve Your Lighting Set Up

When it comes to shooting photography and video, reflectors fall into the "basic need" category. Whether you're dabbling in the craft for fun or shooting professionally, everyone should own and have a basic understanding of how to use a reflector. If you think standard reflectors are too expensive or just want a fun project check out this quick DIY video by J.P. Morgan from the Slanted Lens on making your own reflector out of bead foam.

Bead foam, a type of styrofoam board which can be bought from any major hardware supply store, works really well as a reflector. As J.P. demonstrates in his video, it's also relatively indestructible. When you purchase a board from the store, it comes with a silver side and a side with writing on it. However, when you strip off the silver, it leaves the board with a nice soft white surface. To make a dual sided reflector, simply buy two boards, strip one side of it's silver lining, and then tape them together. Make sure you have the boards cut in manageable sizes at the store to make transport a little easier. You can always reassemble them later with tape or spray adhesive to create your own custom sized reflector.

Do Yourself It?????

thanks for the catch ;)

You know what works really well, is super cheap, requires almost no crafting, and comes varying types of colors and shine? Reflectors you put in the windshield of your car. The ones you fold up are actually a good teaching tool too.
