Shooting in manual mode is one of the most fundamental skills any photographer needs to have and really represents one of the first major steps you can take in taking full control of your image-making. That's not to say you should always shoot in manual mode; there are certainly situations in which you might find that shooting in one of the various semi-automatic modes actually gives you an advantage, particularly if you're photographing in quickly changing lighting conditions. But learning to master manual mode will give you a competent understanding of the various exposure parameters so you can make better decisions, whether you're shooting in manual or a semi-automatic mode and so you can take better control of how your images will look.
