No matter how good you are, there is always room to learn more and improve as a photographer. There are many different levels you go through in your development as a photographer, and knowing where you are can help you prioritize where to focus your attention next. This insightful video discusses the five levels of proficiency as a photographer and what it means to be at each one.

No doubt, there are a lot of important fundamentals to operating a camera and lighting to master, and there are numerous editing techniques and more that take a lot of practice to get down pat. But even once you have gotten all those down, there is a lot more to go; in fact, that is arguably the most exciting time. Once you no longer have to worry about building your technique or ensuring that you are not making a mistake with your lighting, your mind is freed to explore your creativity, to experiment with new ideas, and to develop a personal style and discover who you are as a photographer. Coming up on second year in taking photography more seriously, I'd say I'm in level 3 territory. I still feel like I'm imitating others (and faffing about with settings) to improve my skills.
