1.23 - "Snap Shot"

I spent last year traveling for work. While in Manhattan, Kansas, I was blessed to meet a nice gentleman that would take over the office I was in. He enjoys hiking just like me, so I took him out on the Konza Prairie one night after work. Is there a more representative photo of someone over 65 than of a person trying to take a pic on an iPhone? Do I think this is the best portrait? Heck no. But I do like this shot and hope you do as well.

Should have kept this one out of the limelight. Sometimes a photographer sees in his own work more than is really there- typically when it's a close friend or relative or there is a story we've experienced. I've often been caught doing this myself. Unless the photo tells that story it is often meaningless to the viewers even if you tell the story. Photographers have to be their own toughest critics recognizing when not to show poor work. Your other photo of this same man tells me a lot more about him whereas this photo is a tourist snapshot. I would have to ask what the point of submitting it was when the other photo was sufficient. I'm not trying to be brutal here, but someone has to bring it up. Too often photographers in this forum complain about low scores and that no one tells them why. Positives? It's sharp, the colors are nice, the exposure is well done.

Lol, fair assessment. Honestly, I don't have portraits of any elderly people but enjoy entering the contests. The last sentence of your critique show it should be a 2, but I don't really care what it gets rated. There are WAY better shots than this in the contest, but it is fun getting feedback on your work, whether you think it is poor work or not. I appreciate the feedback, and sorry I took up your time by posting it. As someone that rarely shoots photos of people, when the contest includes portraits (which the past few all have), I'm limited. And I haven't entered the last few contests, so I finally found a couple shots to enter. Thanks again for the feedback.
