This is the veil nebula, about 1500-2000 light years away.
Total exposure length; 8.5 hours.
The remnants of a supernova that exploded 10.000-20.000 years ago.
Taken with a dedicated astrophotography black&white camera, using specificl filters to capture the wavelengths of light from the different gasses in the nebula. Oxygen, Hydrogen, Sulphur.
These 3 layers get combined in the the R, B, G to create the final colour image.
Hydrogen = green channel
Oxygen = blue channel
Sulphur = Red channel.
(This is the same method that the Hubble uses to create its images)
i dont understand how your image is rated this way? its beautiful and i think many "voters" here dont understand a thing about photography
Due to the way the image is created. The critique also ask for “rgb added in post”. Not just gels, lights, etc.
This image is created with a black and white camera, capturing 3 black and white layers individually of the different gasses. The black and white layers are used to combine into one RGB image. It’s what is called a “false colour image” in astrophotography, as they are not the colours as you would see them (most of it is infrared)
Either way, all the RGB is added in post. Which is something the critique asks for in the description of the critique. They’re not asking for just “rgb lit” images

Thats true..and its the natural process to producing such result..
anyways i think the members here just browse the images and vote based on first impressions which could be a factor here
this weekend i went to the desert just to capture the Nebula as a first try, and the Veil nebula is faint and tough to capture in this amount of detail..the work done to reproduce this image is tremendous and being classified as "Needs Work" is just funny imo..

Well, as long as people aren’t giving snapshot ratings on this. It’s fine.
It’s clearly not a snapshot, as it’s 8.5 hours of exposing, over several nights, + 3-5 hours in post.
It might just be first impression votes, without knowledge on what it takes to create an image like it, and without reading the description.
Or people are used to the images of the hubble, and think that is the level you should be achieving as an astrophotographer. (Because several billion worth of equipment in space is equal to 5 grand worth of equipment in a backyard)
And creating a portfolio of astrophotography images can be difficult with so many amazing images available from nasa and hubble (You can’t beat hubble)
So this shows that voters here are billionairs 😄
