Sony A6700 with 16-70 f/4 lens - @37mm f/5.6 and 1/20th of a second exposure at ISO 1000.

My daughter received this plasma ball and I thought the patterns and light were interesting so decided to turn it into a fun self assignment in the studio. I set up a plain white paper backdrop, centered the plasma ball then used small LED lights set to red to the sides and slightly aimed at the backdrop to illuminate it in a completely dark space. I chose the vivid red because most of the electrical patterns were coolish and blue so I thought a more complementary color would help them stand out. I tried a serious of shots of just the plasma ball and patterns but then experimented with touching it and having a human element in there and preferred this approach. I tried slightly different positions of the hand and the patterns of electricity were all slightly different but I felt it all came together in this one and liked this one best. This biggest challenge was getting the right balance of exposure - too fast I could not get enough light to register, and too slow, the moving electrical patterns merged together and lost definition. I found at around 1/20th of a second was just right at an aperture of f/5.6 and an ISO of 1000. This was run through Ai Denoise in Lightroom, brought into Photoshop where I applied some curves adjustments and finished in Luminar Neo with some slight enhancements.
