I took this photo in fall of 2023 of an iconic sign and venue in Edmonton, Canada. Pentax K5 with a manual 200mm vintage lens, this is straight out of the camera. The Roxy was a movie theatre built in the 1930s outside of the downtown where most of the movie theatres were in the city. It was tiny but served the neighbourhood for decades. Mom took me to see Bambi and Mary Poppins there in the 1960s. Later it became a performing arts theatre for innovative productions, still under its iconic marquee. About 8 years ago it burned to the ground and left a cultural hole in the city. With the usual wrangling, the city, the province and the federal govt. funded rebuilding the Roxy. Like a Phoenix it arose from the ashes, still under that sign. I took the photo from a block away in a small park that the city has decorated with trees strung with the coloured lights seen in frame. I could only take this photo in the fall and after the leaves had dropped revealing the sign.
