Story Behind the Image
This photograph was taken in late afternoon, in a flower field at the foot of a mountain range. I wanted to capture a simple, quiet moment—someone blending naturally into the landscape, with a soft, almost suspended atmosphere. The tilted pose, the wind pulling the hair, and the foreground vegetation helped keep a sense of movement and spontaneity.
How the Photo Was Taken
I placed the camera very low to the ground to include the grass and flowers in the foreground. I triggered the shot remotely to keep precise framing while allowing natural, relaxed poses. Using a wide-angle focal length at this height helped emphasize the depth between the subject, the forest, and the mountains in the background.
Challenges Encountered
The main challenge was the wind: it constantly moved both the plants and the model’s hair, making consistency tricky. Light was also shifting rapidly—the sun was setting behind clouds, creating constant changes in color temperature. Finally, the uneven terrain made focusing difficult because of the elements so close to the lens.
Lighting Used
The scene is lit entirely by natural light. I worked with a diffused sky and a low sun casting warm tones behind the mountains, while the foreground stayed cooler. This natural warm–cool split became the foundation of the final color palette.

Color and Post-Processing
Since this critique focuses on color, here are the key steps:
- Selective white balance adjustments to enhance the warm sunset tones while keeping the greens cooler.
- Slight desaturation of greens so they wouldn’t overpower the scene.
- Gentle boost of lavender/purple tones in the flowers to create harmony with the model’s top.
- Subtle enhancement of magenta in the sky for depth.
- Light S-curve contrast to maintain a soft, airy feel.
- Minimal atmospheric haze correction on the mountains to preserve realism.
