For this image I used my Sony A6600 with the Sigma 16mm set at f1.4 with ISO 100 and a five second exposure. I had seen some Aurora Facebook posts with an unusual level of red in the sky and knew I had to get out there as soon as I got my kids to bed. I live in a small rural town in Manitoba, Canada, but even then there is a fair amount of light pollution so I drove a few minutes out of town to a small hill where it was darker and I could get above the trees. I believe I was there for less than five minutes when the sky exploded with color and I captured this moment above me. It definitely did not look like this to the naked eye but the reds and greens were obvious and I had never seen anything like this before. All the color was there in the original image, just a fair bit duller, so in post I turned up the whites quite a bit, the blacks all the way down, and the highlights down a bit too. I gave it a slight vignette and did some basic noise reduction, but that's about it. Perhaps with a longer exposure I could have started out with more color, but too long and the stars start to move and the colors of the aurora might start to blend together, as they are moving too. It was an incredible night and I praise God for the experience.
