For this image I used my Sony A6600 with the Sigma 16mm set at f1.4 with ISO 400 and a 3.2 second exposure. I had seen some Aurora Facebook posts with an unusual level of red in the sky and knew I had to get out there as soon as I got my kids to bed. I live in a small rural town in Manitoba, Canada, but even then there is a fair amount of light pollution so I drove a few minutes out of town to a small hill where it was darker and I could get above the trees. That worked out great, as I was able to capture the tree line in this image and it gave a great frame of reference to the lightshow taking place above. Although I could see the reds and greens in the sky, they were certainly duller in real life, so I used my artistic discretion and brought them out. I bumped up the contrast and whites a fair bit and turned down the blacks all the way. I did some basic noise reduction and added a graduated filter to darken the top half of the image, evening out the brightness, but that's about it. I believe the light on the horizon is from a nearby farm and I love how, because it was partly cloudy, it lit up the clouds a touch, so that the sky goes from one color to the next, becoming more spectacular the further up you go. I've never seen the northern lights like this before and it was an incredible experience. "The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of his hands."
