This 24mm f/1.8 Lens for Sony Is $1,000 Cheaper Than the 24mm f/1.4 GM — and It Has Autofocus

Third-party lenses for Sony are plentiful and some slightly more obscure manufacturers have been producing some quality glass in the last two years. This 24mm f/1.8 lens from Viltrox — with autofocus — is going to cost a mere $399, making it a full thousand dollars less expensive than the Sony equivalent.

The Sony 24mm f/1.4 is a stellar piece of glass and for those who need that wide open, corner-to-corner performance, it’s worth every penny. However, there aren’t too many fast options at this focal length which is why the new 24mm f/1.8 lens from Viltrox could be a compelling choice for anyone who needs to save money and doesn’t need such a massive aperture.

Chris Brockhurst, a.k.a., Felicia, puts an entertaining spin on this lens comparison, bravely bringing a breath of fresh air to the format and a chucking in a nod to the stoner comedy Friday featuring Ice Cube and Chris Tucker for good measure.

I own the Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 and I’ve been pleased with its performance, so this 24mm f/1.8 should be a welcome addition to the third-party E-mount lineup. Are you tempted? Let us know in the comments below.
