Is Canon About to Announce an 85-Megapixel Full Frame Mirrorless Camera?

Just as we recover from Sony’s surprise launch of its 61-megapixel a7R IV, rumors have just started circulating that Canon is about to announce its own high-resolution, full frame mirrorless camera featuring a sensor that may boast more than 80 megapixels.

Canon Rumors is claiming to have spoken to a source at Canon who says that the Japanese manufacturer has “caught up to Sony” in the sensor wars. As it stands, the rumors seem to suggest anything between 70 and 85 megapixels, with some throwing some maths at the pixel density of the rumored EOS M6 Mark II and scaling it up to full frame. While Canon might be about to outdo their rivals in terms of resolution, it seems unlikely to me that it will match the a7R IV’s 10 frames per second, however.

After the furor following the launch of the EOS R and the Nikon Z 6 and Z 7, readers might be pleased to learn that dual card slots are expected.

An announcement in the next month or two might account for the unexpected release from Sony of their new “medium format quality” full frame mirrorless camera. Most major announcements tend to come in late spring or early fall, perhaps making the IV a few months early.

Such a move from Canon would not be entirely unexpected, although fans might prefer the company to be focused on improved dynamic range, better low light performance, and video specifications that aren’t protecting Canon’s other cameras.

What do you expect? And if you’re a Canon fan, what are you hoping for? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

I'm sure SoNikon already has another megapixel rig on the drawing board...

It may be a rumor, however, I like the fact that it's out there. I am glad that I haven't gone to Sony. Just two years ago A7RIII was the thing.. Now it's out of date. If Canon makes a large leap frog, I will consider moving in that direction with my 5DSR as a backup. So, I buy a mirrorless new Canon "whatever" with a 24-70 new lens and an adapter to accommodate my other lenses. We know that whatever Canon makes, it will be constructed like a tank. The dynamic range and high speed shutter issues aren't a problem for me today because I shoot 80% on a tripod.

FF finally caught up to 20mp M43 pixel density. Not that means anything. I think it would be about 148mp to catch up to 1" 20mp sensor...oh wait...they have a 250mp APS-H sensor since 2015. I scratch my head when I hear reviewers say M43 is at its limits for resolution. I'm sure there are higher resolution FF sensors out there.

Why ??

Because they know their customers are dump Gear Heads ..

So, first of all this is a rumor, and only tells us about pixel counting.
Better Dinamic range is good? Better vídeo is good? Better autofocusing is good? Better construction, sealling, buttons and ergonomics? If its better, of course its good.
I got me the R. Great camera. I wish companys had a channel for sugestions on upgrade of functionalities.
First thing I missed was the joystick but as soon as I knew about the touch and drag I was happy about it. Touch screen can be very powerful. Thing is some stuffs could work better in this function, like set the touch are to thirds instead of half, aquire focus when finger is released from touch and drag and also make the focus point movement according to your motion speed. So, if you move it quickly you could move the points from diagonal oposites quick. If you move slowly, points would go more like to “point in point”, maybe even auto zooming in for accurace check...
An intervalometer would be a nice add.
The RP focus bracketing would be great...

To paraphrase Stanley Kubrick, everyone needs to stop worrying and love the Z series. All this back and forth just highlights the fact that there is only one true camera manufacturer...
