Canon Announces the EOS M5, Its First Real Competitor in Mirrorless Photography

Canon Announces the EOS M5, Its First Real Competitor in Mirrorless Photography

Until now, mirrorless bodies have been more of a side project for Canon, with the company declining to compete on the level of Sony and Fuji. However, today, Canon has announced the EOS M5 and EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens, which represent its first serious attempt at an upper level mirrorless option.

EOS M5

With the introduction of the EOS M5, Canon has shown that they are serious about their traditionally quirky line of solid lenses, but underpowered bodies (albeit with good sensors). The M5 is clearly meant to be a high-performance mirrorless camera and could be a serious competitor in what's becoming a more crowded marketplace. With a body-only price of $979, it takes solid aim at many other comparable bodies.

Specifications

  • 24.2 MP APS-C sensor
  • DIGIC 7 processor
  • ISO range: 100-25,600
  • Dual Pixel AF
  • 7 fps continuous shooting (9 fps with AF lock)
  • 1080p video at 60 fps
  • Digital IS with 5-axis stabilization which will work in tandem with lenses that feature optical IS for better results (particularly smoother video)
  • 2.36-million dot EVF
  • Touch and Drag AF for moving the AF frame
  • Focus peaking
  • Tilting 3.2" touchscreen LCD (1.62 million dots)
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC
  • SD card slot
  • Can use EF/EF-S lenses with an adaptor

EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM

The EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM (29-240mm equivalent) is the latest addition to the growing line of EF-M lenses. We don't know much about it yet beyond what's given in its name, but Canon notes that users can expect four stops of shake correction from its IS and that it features a maximum magnification of 0.31x at 150mm, giving it a quite respectable 1:3 maximum reproduction ratio. If it's anything like their other mirrorless lenses, it should be a solid performer. At $499, it slots in at the upper edge of their current mirrorless lens lineup.

Preorder

Shipping for the EOS M5 is expected in November, while the EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM will be available in December, but you can preorder both today at the links below.

So basically it's a Sony A6000 (24mp, 1080p/60, tilting screen...) but well over twice the price and two and a half years late?

you forgot "much larger"

Yeah baby! Canon style. Or Apple style. You see, including new tech costs money / shrinks margins. As long as you find iDiots who buy your product even if it is 2-3 years behind the curve, all the better for you. You have much higher margins than the competition. Just look at Apple's margins on the iPhone vs. any competitor's.

As for myself, the time may come when I put all my Canon lenses up on eBay and order a few G-Masters to replace them ;)

Any plans for Canon mirror less full frame?

Canon must have some really different information on what consumer needs, pretty much every other mirrorless in the same price range has better specs.

Boy, those specs sure are impressive, ay?...

So it's the same price as an A6300 body but with specs that fall short? Canon, you're really making it difficult to like you...

It actually has similar specs like the a6000^^

yup, and for almost twice the price. I wonder why they charge so much.

Yup almost exactly the same as the a6000 with fewer native lenses (EM-5 needs adapter for EF and EF-S lenses), 2x the price, and 3 years too late.

Talk about click bait! Someone should be reprimanded for using that headline! it's certainly NOT a real competitor in the mirrorless market.

Anywhoo. Canon again shows it won't put out a product that will compete against its DSLR line. Another weak attempt at putting out a product that would be almost instantly successful if it were at all relatively close spec-wise with current mirrorless bodies.

At this rate, in another 1-2 years Sony & Fuji will have mirrorless competitive to their higher end lines (almost there) and they will lose half their market share. Great plan Canon (and Nikon for that matter).

Complacency is the beginning of your demise!

Yeah, but can you text, check your social media and make a phone call with it? (sarcasm)

That 3.5-6.3 aperture lens sure screams "competitor"

EOS ... More like POS

Canon's first real competitor!? Amazing! Does it use EF lenses? No? Oh....so not really then.

It's cute.

What I imagine Canon engineers look like... Come on guys, get with the times!

As the person with the cigar is Ismabard Kingdom Brunel, that would be a compliment!

Given the resistance to Brunel's revolutionary ideas from conventional thinking, which he continually fought against (something that was celebrated in Bob Godfrey's Oscar-winning animated short film, Great) if anything, he was consistently well ahead of his time.

2003 called. They want their camera design back.

Not that Im a video guy but I was a bit surprised not to see 4K thrown in there for at least a little extra boost for interest from buyers.

The new IS should make the 4k look sweet... oh wait!

Thanks to canon I can confidently start investing in sony lenses, there is no chance that I will find a decent canon camera that shoot both still and video in the close future to put all my canon lense in use.

Wow! 1080p!!! Amazing. I'm pre-ordering!!! :)

1080p is enough for anybody. - Bill Gates

Canon has 0 chance of catching Sony. 0% chance with 0% interest. Not with Full Frame, Especially Not with Mirrorless. Canon reps HATE Sony, and it's clear to see why.

DSLRs still outsell mirrorless 2.7 to 1, and Canon is the market leader there. Despite all the praise we rain on Sony, it appears Canon is doing just fine.

Given I have worked in a larger chain camera store for the last few years as a side job, and listening to Canon customers issues and worries, I can assure you good sir, I have watched the shift happening first hand.

3 years ago? Would have completely agreed with you. Now? No way.

I personally have converted 20 die hard canon users, in the last 6 months ALONE (not accounting for other reps at others stores I have talked to, and ones in different chains), Just me in a small town. These are people who are professional shooters mind you, die hard Canon shooters from 6-15 years.

Ask any sales associate across the country, it's happening very slowly, but many Canon users are slowly losing their loyalty in favor of what many are starting to realize is a superior product.

I know I will get flack for the "Photographer makes the shot", and that is correct, but that is NOT what we are discussing, so ask anyone to refrain from making that argument.
