G-Technologies Introduces New 2K/4K Storage Solutions

Though it's not yet safe to say that 4K has "landed," it is getting close. There are more capable hardware solutions landing on the market every day. G-Technologies is getting ready to show off some new 2K and 4K ready storage solutions for the market: the G-DRIVE ev 220 and a new G-RAID with removable drives.

The new G-DRIVE ev 220 is part of part of their "Evolution Series." It puts "greater speed, capacity and flexibility into [a] creative workflow." The G-DRIVE ev 220—a USB 3.0 hard drive with transfer rates up to 220MB/s. It can be used alone or with the Evolution Series G-DOCK ev for the flexibility and expandability. The new G-DRIVE ev 220 will be available in June with an MSRP of $349.95 for 2TB.

The new G-RAID with Removable Drives extends G-Technology’s flagship G-RAID line. It is a new solution is a high-performance removable dual-drive storage system. With transfer rates of up to 330MB/s, the G-RAID is configurable in RAID 0, RAID 1, or JBOD and features USB 3.0, eSATA, along with FireWire for ultimate flexibility. The G-RAID ships with two removable 7,200RPM hard drives, complete in an all-aluminum enclosure. Now available, the G-RAID has an MSRP of $1,199.95 for 12TB, $749.95 for 8TB and $449.95 for 4TB.

Both these and the STUDIO line will be available for viewing and testing at CineGear Expo in LA, June June 6-7, 2014.

It still seems a bit pricey, especially for the 3-4 TB solutions. You can get a RAID-1 two drive enclosure with a 4 TB capacity for less than 400 USD (about 70-80$ for the enclosure and 150$ apiece for two 4 TB drives), if you're willing to roll your own -- and you get the added advantage of having both USB 3.0 and eSATA ports.
