New Nikon 70-200mm f/4 Available for Pre-Order Now!

Canon's had this one for a while, but Nikon's new 70-200mm f/4 is now available for pre-order for a cool $1399.

The new lens features just about everything that the f2.8 version does, including nano coating, the quick silent wave motor, and the best VR system Nikon has to offer.

Kinda steep price for an f/4 or just me?

It really is! The Canon version is about $600-800 without IS or $1000
w/IS, An extra $400 doesn't seem right... But I'm not affected, I don't
own a Nikon so I can't talk :P

It's only $50 more than the Canon's regular price. http://goo.gl/5uisu

That seems in line with the price hikes on the 24-70 2.8 II and 70-200 IS II / VR II as well, as those lenses are close to $2,500 each!

That seems rather overpriced in my opinion... Even if it is a new Lens.

I say forget this lens and buy a used 80-200 f/2.8

I just so happen to have one I'm trying to get rid of too ;)

agree too pricey yet overshadowed by the power of the 2.8

I'm sure it's tack sharp between f/5.6 - f/11, would be great for studio portraiture, not so good for sports, birding or low light though, which negates the wedding shooters, concert shooters....but then again Nikon's ISO capabilities and noise reduction on some of the newest bodies could make it usable in most situations.

There is an advantage to it being somewhat smaller in size, and F/4 is plenty for daylight work. I feel like the large size of the full 70-200 2.8's draw too much attention at times, but it also helps that NIkon's telephotos are not colored "LOOK AT ME" white!

Constant f4 is nothing to balk at.  At $1k (then tax) less than the f2.8, this is definitely a welcome addition.  Some people frankly don't need a 2.8 for their flavour of photography.  I think the price is right where I was expecting.  Now lets wait to see some real world results.

Minor gripe though, just like the Canon, does not appear to come with the mounting ring.  Very annoying..

but there is obviously a space left open for you to add one... just like Canon's! C'mmon thou, what do you expect from a $1,400 lens - them to just throw in a $5 tripod collar? Next thing you're going to tell me that you expect the hood AND carrying bag too!

Well folks even though I hate talking about gear I will suggest get the Tamrom 70-200mm 2.8. I don't see any difference in the quality of the Image. And I have shot with both lens. Here is an example of the tamrom 70-200 2.8 at f4 on D80 ISO 200 for the spec folks.

Nice work, Paul!
