New Sony FX9 Firmware Brings Substantial Updates

New Sony FX9 Firmware Brings Substantial Updates

First announced in April 2020 and now arriving a month ahead of schedule, Sony has released firmware update V2.0 for their PXW-FX9 Cinema Line cameras.

Firmware update V2.0 brings many great new functions to the Sony FX9. A FFcrop 5K option is now available in the Imager Scan Mode menu, allowing for oversampled 4K60p recording. Plus, DCI 4K (4,096 x 2,160) can be shot in 6K, FFcrop 5K, or S35 4K Imager Scan Modes. For the S35 2K mode, Sony said image quality has been improved. Finally, in FF 2K mode, new 150 fps and 180 fps frame rate options have been added for Slow & Quick Motion.

Solid autofocusing was a highlight for the Sony FX9 at launch, and now it’s being improved with added Eye AF support in addition to the face detection previously available. Further, there’s new touch support for moving Flexible Spot or Zone focus areas. AF transition speed and AF subject shift sensitivity is now assignable as a custom button.

The Sony FX9 is now receiving 16-bit raw video output capabilities using the $2,498 XDCA-FX9 add-on. The camera can also now have user-created 3D LUTs loaded. And, there’s new Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) support for high dynamic range shooting.

For information on all the firmware updates as well as links to the V2.0 download, visit the Sony Pro website. An updated firmware roadmap now shows that the free V3.0 upgrade will include S700PTP remote protocol, Center Scan mode for Super 16mm lenses, and B4 lens support when using an adaptor.
