Sigma has announced that the 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art lens for Sony's E mount and the Leica L mount has been delayed due to high demand from consumers. The company has released a statement indicating that they will need additional time to meet the demand, resulting in a delay in the lens making it to market.
Sigma announced the delay last week, indicating an unexpectedly high amount of preorders as the reason for the additional time needed to fill orders. The high demand is not particularly surprising. The 24-70mm f/2.8 is the bread and butter lens for numerous photographers in all sorts of genres, and Sigma's Art series has gained a well-deserved reputation for offerings high-quality optics at prices that undercut those of first-party manufacturers. The 24-70mm f/2.8 is no different, coming in at $1,099, exactly half the price of Sony's version. Sigma has not provided an exact date for the lens' availability, but I expect it to be quite popular once it does arrive on the market. In particular, while Sigma's recent Art lenses have been of high optical quality at affordable prices, they have generally been quite bulky, but the 24-70mm f/2.8 is actually lighter than Sony's version, a real boon for wedding and events photographers.
