Sirui Saturn 35mm: Anamorphic Lens on a Budget

Anamorphic lenses are becoming more attainable and that's exciting for many of us film nerds who have yearned for one for some time. In this video, Todd Dominey takes one of these new budget anamorphic lenses and puts it through its paces.

In a recent article, I mentioned just how pleased I am to see anamorphic lenses becoming somewhat attainable. Typically, anamorphic lenses have set you back many thousands — usually tens of thousands — and were therefore reserved for high-end cinema and productions. That was a shame and left many of us disappointed, but as is usually the case with technology, as time goes on, the price goes down. The Sirui 35mm f/1.8 Super35 Anamorphic 1.33x lens (in this case the for Canon RF mount) isn't tens of thousands of dollars you'll be pleased to know — not by a long chalk. In fact, right now, it's $579 brand new!

As much as I want this lens, it's hard not to take on Dominey's comments toward the end of the video. He raises the point that as it's difficult to match unsqueezed anamorphic lens footage with standard 16:9 footage, how often will you really use the lens? This would be unfortunately true for me, and I imagine that unless you buy a few other focal length anamorphic lenses to go with it, you may only use this lens for fun and small passion projects.
