Street Photography at Night With the Fujifilm X100V and Conversion Lenses

Street photography videos always have my interest. Street photography videos at night double the interest, for reasons I'm not entirely clear on myself. But if you throw in an interesting camera setup into the mix, I'll make a tea and clear my schedule.

Vuhlandes is fast becoming one of my favorite content creators on YouTube. He is a photographer in Detroit, Michigan, often photographing gritty, street-style mixed with photojournalism. He also manages to have a distinct visual aesthetic which makes his work engaging.

In this video, he takes to the streets a few hours before sunrise to shoot with his Fujifilm X100V — a very well-received, compact mirrorless body. I've wanted one since they launched, but the fixed lens put me off somewhat. However, the use of Fujifilm's conversion lenses can remedy that to a certain degree. The Fujifilm WCL-X100 Wide-Angle Conversion lens widens the focal length to 28mm and claims to have no impact on image quality, and no impact on aperture. The more expensive Fujifilm TCL-X100 II Tele Conversion lens increases the magnification of the fixed lens by 1.4x, which puts the new focal length to a 50mm equivalent.

There are questions of whether the impact these attachments have on the form factor — which is a true selling point of the X100V — negates their worth, but you don't have to use them, they can just be there for times where the fixed lens won't cut the mustard. Vuhlandes certainly puts them to good use here and creates some beautiful shots; a good advert for both the X100V and its conversion lenses.
