Low-Key/Low-Light Portraiture with Toys/Figures

I'm primarily a toy/product photographer (for toy companies, so..a toy photographer!). I shoot highly detailed sixth-scale figures mainly, so I've done a lot of portraiture with them. Lately, I've been getting into dramatic, low-key/low-light work ala Chris Knight and others.

I WILL try this with some humans one day, but having been a...

Father-in-law

My father-in-law was being a somewhat willing model as I tested new lighting gear. The dramatic lighting and his intense stare remind me that dads are ALWAYS looking out for their little girls - no matter how long you've been married.

Single speedlight on the beach

I was up early for my normal day job (supply/substitute primary school teacher), but the work was cancelled, and I thought - why not go down to the beach? Low tide coincided with early morning sun, and the weather was *very* windy, which meant waves. However, it also meant I couldn't use any sort of modifier on the flash or it would have blown...

Madame Bois

Storm Kiira hit Finland last summer and left us with hundreds of acres of destroyed forests.
These photos are a story about the force of the nature which made Madame Bois bend the knee.

battle in the woods

i take this shot at 10pm in the morning with a nikon d600 80-200mm lens, and a put a speedlight at my right side combined with ambient light.

i hope you like it and leave any feedback

Man portrait 2 round

Hi, in this shots i use one speedlight with the 48'' deep octa, and I played with the positioning in different heights and angles, to create different types of illumination in the model.

I use a nikon D600 with an 85mm 1.8 lens.

Repose in Red

Finally getting around to posting some photos into this community. This one was cropped with Instagram in mind, so I may go back and look at some other ratios as well. I'm not entirely thrilled with the lighting job, but I like the overall look. There's a bit of editing to lighten around her face and to add to the intensity of the red....

Single SB900 and first time with a radio trigger.

Colleague, Account Exec and stand in model Sophie gave me less than 1 hour after work before she had to skip off to meet a lucky friend for dinner. At least this cut down my options which resulted in a very direct single light set up approach. 1 SB900 above centre with enough fall off to feather the light across Sophie's face and place small...

Get Ready...

made the mistake of asking her to be creepy :)
shot with 3 lights -
one on the background, one strip light horizontal above her fave, one strip behind her on camera right.
