Does anyone know why some of the posting lited in this group, and likely other groups, have nice quality and quite large thumbnails, and other don't have one.

When you upload an image with your group post, it will have a thumbnail. When you add in the link url to your Fstoppers portfolio image instead of uploading to the post, then it doesn't show up as a thumbnail.

thanks.

Do you know if it is possible to upload an image, not in my portfolio. if I already have 10 in my portfolio?

Do you know how I can have more than 10 in my portfolio as some other have?

Ian..here are the the portfolio rules...

from FAQs section
How many photos can I add to my portfolio?
The upload limit is 10 photos. However, for each photo that has an average rating of at least 3.5 stars and has been rated by at least 5 people, you will earn an extra upload. In other words, you can potentially have unlimited uploads if all your images are rated highly by the community.

You also earn an extra upload if your photo is selected as a Photo of the Day.

Thank you Michael. That explains the mystery. I need to be more patient and up load more popular material, leaving the most popular and culling those not well liked or not attracting high votes. Makes sense.

If only I had a portfolio of pretty women to show. That would help. But bleak northern landscapes and old industrial dereliction and decay has less appeal obviously, so I will have to try harder. Bring it on.

North York Moores NP is right next to you. There can be great images there I would bet (if I was a betting man - LOL!) I have days and weeks were I think the mid-west of the US is the most boring place for photography, then I get an inspiration and there it is...a pretty nice image. "Bring it on" sums up the situation perfectly.

You are right. The North Yorkshire Morrs is right on the hills just out of town and it is a lovely bleak place, my Grandparents were born there and I have studied its geography when at school. I love it but it is perhaps a bit easy. Or at least it would be difficult to not fall into the trap of shooting pictures with widespread appeal, so no real value. Post cards and biscuit tin lids come to mind. With effert, and in the current season, when the tourists are gon, it is certainly worth the work. Right now I am in the industrial groove but also thinking about doing Classic cars and Fashion and headshots. One thng at a time, though. Focus.
