The Department of Interior Lists Job for a New Ansel Adams

If you have ever learned anything about the history of photography, chances are you have at least heard the name Ansel Adams. Adams was a landscape photographer who worked with the U.S. Department of Interior to capture images of the national parks. He is most well-known for his work with large format monochrome landscape imagery. Recently, the Department of Interior has posted a job opening that would allow someone to follow in Adams' footsteps.

This full-time job would be based out of Washington D.C. and would earn a stated salary ranging from $63,722 to $99,296 a year and require traveling at least ten days per month. The department is looking for a candidate that is well versed in "the principles and techniques of large format black and white photography," although a knowledge of digital photography is required as well.

While the job listing warns of "physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, walking over rough or rocky surfaces, recurring bending, crouching, or stretching, and recurring lifting of moderately heavy equipment and materials" as well as "moderate risks and discomfort due to the deteriorating state of some sites and exposure to weather conditions," the reward would be worth the effort, as the images will be used as documentation for the HABS/HAER/HALS permanent collection at the Library of Congress. This also means that the photographer will have to capture imagery of historic buildings, examples of engineering, and landscapes.

In the world of photography, there are many shoes to fill, including those as big as Ansel Adams. For so many photographers, this is a dream job, but for one, it will be the opportunity of a lifetime. If you think you've got what it takes, you can head over to USA JOBS for more information on the position.

Those are some big shoes to fill.

No pressure at all. Only every landscape photographer in world will be waiting to see the work.

"Only US citizens" kind of lame if you ask me, but that's the deal I guess.

You do understand it's a job working for the "U.S. Department of Interior"..... hiring a non US citizen would be LAME.

not at all. what is lame is that I get to pour in buckets of money for tuition at a US based university and the second I have my degree I pretty much get to go home. that is LAME.

Not trying to make a big deal out of this, so this will be my last comment on the matter.... but, you're the one who just called wherever you're from "Home"! Perhaps instead you should simply be happy you were able to come to this country to be better educated. You do realize someone who does live here was probably denied admission to that school because they took you instead? Apply for citizenship if you like this country that much, otherwise quit complaining about it and go home.
