Can a $1,000 phone compete against a $6,500 camera? In this video, Gavin Hardcastle of fototripper pits the Sony a1 camera against his Samsung S23 in his usual entertaining but informative fashion.
Both the Sony a1 and the Samsung S23 boast a 50-megapixel sensor. However, the sensor size is obviously different, with the Sony being a full frame and the Samsung a 1/1.3-inch sensor. In Hardcastle's video, he is very interested to see how phone technology has improved and whether he can achieve a nice, clean, sharp, and usable image.
In a very amusing start with lots of anecdotes, Hardcastle is clearly having issues getting to grips with his new phone and working out the ins and outs of the Pro mode and the Pro Raw mode, as well as handholding an ND filter in front of the phone lens. For a large section of the video, it reminds me of trying to teach my dad any type of new technology that he buys. It's always a laugh!
Once Hardcastle figured out the settings, he was very pleased with how the phone performed. While phone cameras and their software are still not fully there yet, especially when compared to cameras such as the Sony a1, it's not a million miles off and is very encouraging for the future with something that fits in your pocket.
Anyone else bothered by his constant portrait in the corner? The video has his face in it anyway.

Great! Thanks so much!
That is exactly what I sound like when attempting (and failing) to take photos with a phone.
