The Calgary Herald reports that tip-offs from members of the public posted on social media have been instrumental in leading to arrests over $27,000 worth of stolen gear from The Camera Store on the weekend.
Two suspects were taken into custody after meeting undercover police who responded to an online post that appeared to be advertising one of the stolen cameras.
Police from the city’s online stolen property team were acting on the back of advice from the public when they replied to the ad on buy-and-sell site Kijiji. They made arrangements to meet two sellers, who were then arrested.
Over the weekend, the store had been broken into, with a Leica MP Safari Edition camera — green in color, and a limited-edition piece with just 1,500 made — missing. Also gone was an $8,000 Hasselblad X1D and three Hasselblad XC lenses, 30mm, 45mm, and 90mm.
Staff had noted the break-in seemed “very targeted,” since specific items were taken, noting other equipment worth over $80,000 was left behind.
Enquiring about the Hasselblad X1D, police were also offered lenses that matched the description of those stolen. Although the Hasselblad was then recovered, the rare Leica MP Safari worth $13,000 is still missing.
The sellers have been named as 60-year-old Tan Bui and 36-year-old Justin Ross.
