Australian Emerald - bug eyes

It is difficult to get sharp images as they are always moving about even when hovering.

So there is a sense of achievement when I manage a sharp close up like this - he was less than 2 metres away from me.

Because we can't view 1:1 here you can't see the detail in this image that shows the individual eyes that make up the larger compound eyes. There are around 25,000 ommatidia which are little individual eyes with their own lens and receptors that make up the two larger structures we think of as their eyes (there are actually 5 larger eyes all together). Each ommatidia generates its own image which are combined to make a single large mosaic.
