On December 12, 1901, Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic radio transmission. The signal—the Morse code for the letter "s" ( \(\dots \) )—travelled over 3,500 km from Poldhu, Cornwall, England, to a receiving station at Signal Hill in St. John's, Newfoundland.
