Near the beginning of the movie, the protagonist Suzume visits an abandoned hot-spring town in Kyushu. The central structure in these ruins—a semi-circular, arch-shaped building—was modeled after the Former Bungo Mori Roundhouse, a historical rail depot originally used to store and service steam locomotives.
