It can be frustrating trying to photograph waterfalls, as they change in character depending on the amount of water, even before the question of the light comes into it.
This day, it all came together - the creamy columns of water, the sun catching the mist floating up. For a moment, all seems right with the world.

I recently purchased a variable ND filter and use it primarily for video, but I’m looking forward to using it for effects like this.
Yes, I would've, Phillip. I've got a variable ND, but one concern I have is that they use two polarisers, and you get a random and rather uncontrollable amount of polarisation with your reduced transmission.
So here, for instance, it might have cut the slight reflection off the water at top, or reduced the glistening on the rocks. And this can be hard to see through an SLR viewfinder. I'll often use a polariser plus ND on waterfalls, as partial polarisation can enhance the image.

Beautiful long exposure. The separate waterfall streams and their patterns as they hit the water make a really interesting image. Also the water mist creates a nice effect.
