Photographer Puts iPhone XS Max Camera to the Test

Los Angeles-based photographer Derrick Freske put his new iPhone XS Max to the test by doing an entire photoshoot exclusively on his new device.

Freske partnered with friend and model Emma Powell to test his upgraded smartphone to compare it to his previous iPhone 7 in low light situations while also experimenting with the new iPhone in both normal and Portrait modes. At certain points, he found he preferred the normal mode photos because of the added graininess found in the Portrait mode photos.

Freske brought out his colored gels to put the new iPhone to the test in low light situations. In the above example, you can tell the iPhone XS Max retains more quality versus the 7, where the highlights are way overexposed. The new flagship iPhone also has a much sharper quality than the earlier version.

Similar principles apply to the above image that was, instead of shot in-studio like the previous image, was shot out on the streets of Los Angeles. Again, the iPhone XS Max outperforms the 7 by keeping with the true-tone of the neon lights and remaining well lit despite it being shot at nighttime.
