Photographer Creates Photoshoot for Young Girl Suffering From Cancer Who Was Bullied

A photographer arranged a special photoshoot for a young girl suffering from a rare form of cancer after she was bullied at school, helping her to regain her confidence and create a special memory with her family.

A'Myah Moon is a sixth grader in Plano, Texas who suffers from a rare form of cancer. Chemotherapy treatments caused her to lose her hair, for which she wears a wig. Sadly, she was the victim of bullying recently, when classmates ripped off her wig, causing her to "want to leave school forever."

Photographer Kate VanMersbergen heard about the bullying incident, when she decided it was "[her] turn to give back." VanMersbergen, herself a cancer survivor who also lost her hair during treatment, felt a special connection to Moon, saying: "When I read that her wig was snatched off her head, I can only imagine what she went through in that exact moment.”

VanMersbergen reached out to her friend, Yana Kolmakova, a local makeup artist, and the two set up a photoshoot for Moon and her family to help her regain her confidence. VanMersbergen points toward one particularly special moment in the shoot, when she shot from a lower angle, capturing an image of Moon emanating confidence:

That was the moment in that entire shoot that I really saw her. The strength in her come out.
