The Winter Olympics are underway, and just like the summer version, the games have drawn a ton of photographers from all around the planet to capture some of the world's best athletes in action. One photographer is not having the best day, though, as they lost their grip on their camera, causing it to take a very, very, very long tumble down the ski hill, as NBC cameras captured its escape.
NBC tweeted a video of the rogue camera tumbling downhill for a good half-minute, flinging several broken pieces off its body, before another photographer saw what was happening and managed to grab it.
The camera appears to be a Sony of some sort. Given it is the Olympics, the most likely candidate is the flagship a1 with a short f/2.8 zoom attached, putting the total cost a shade under $10,000. Thankfully, Sony has a large presence at the Winter Olympics, with technicians on site for repairs and a large library of loaner cameras and lenses, so at the very least, the unlucky photographer will likely be able to get back to shooting relatively quickly, whether with their own camera or a borrowed one.
If only there was something that could act like a failsafe against dropping. Some kind of rope...or maybe a strap?
This is absolutely the first, the single, the one and only time he didn't use the strap.
Sadly the video is blocked for most users outside the USA.
Love the fact that the very next article on Fstoppers is "Why Is It So Hard To Let Your Camera Go?"
That thing was really moving. Hysterical.
Good Ad for Sony,my camera takes a beating and keeps clicking
Not possible to see the video outside of the US :(
wonder how many photos were taken during the downfall...were they in focus? Or was this some sort of new photography..
The camera took Bronze
I would have been right behind it...end over end
