Washington Post Photographer Captures Donald Trump Crossing Out 'Corona' to Write 'Chinese' Virus on Speech

The Washington Post's White House photographer, Jabin Botsford, captured a highly contentious photograph of U.S president, Donald Trump, in the midst of the COVID-19 chaos.

So often photographers play some role in political history, for better or worse. Sometimes those images are momentous, harrowing photographs of war or revolution, and sometimes they're more quiet and subtle. Botsford's image for the Washington Post is closer to the latter of those, though its impact likely far from momentous. The image is likely to become a strong talking point, however.

This week, Trump has come under fire at press conferences for referring to the coronavirus, COVID-19, as the "Chinese virus." Many questions were raised over whether this was racially motivated, with people coming to Trump's defense to say that the virus did indeed originate in China. Many were unconvinced and felt that it was a calculated move by Trump, and Botsford's image certainly points towards that being correct.

The image clearly shows that Trump's notes for his speech yesterday on COVID-19 originally had "Corona virus" written, which he had crossed out with a marker pen and replaced with "Chinese virus." This photograph will likely spark a lively debate on Trump's intention and call into question his motivations for that change. We are yet again shown the power of photography in even the most unlikely of moments.

Well, it has been a fun ride Fstoppers....

Dont let the door hit ya...

Truth hurts sometimes doesn't it?

Have you ever seen the movie, "American History X"? It is about a young man (Derek) who turns into a neo-Nazi after his father is murdered. He goes to jail for killing two men. While he is in prison, he is attacked. While recovering, he receives a visit from his old high school english teacher (Dr. Sweeney). Derek is at a crossroads and doesn't know what to do. Sweeney asks him, "Has anything you've done made your life any better?" Derek realizes that it hasn't.

In the spirit of Dr. Sweeney, I would ask, "Has anything that you have written in this thread made you feel any better"?

Does this really need to be a battlefield?

Good point and very well said.

AHX is a tough movie to watch, and hits quite close to home for me. I hope I'm as objective and discerning as I think I am, and open to new information and ideas.

This thread really is misplaced here and distracts from the core principles of FStoppers (I hope), although I appreciate the origins of the article. I would more expect this type of discussion on Twitter, for example, but I'm also guilty of contributing an unpopular opinion that fanned the flames of this dumpster fire and for that I am not proud. I will not repeat my actions in the future - so I thank you for calling me (and everyone) out.

"To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel. That is the purpose of life."

Everyone called it Coronavirus until Covid-19 the official name was adopted.

.

Nope only the US government is pushing for that name. Last time I checked the US gov and even the total population of the Us is still a very very small percentage of the world population.

.

Mate you picked the wrong guy. I live in Australia. I have family in Hong Kong, Singapore, France, Reunion, Switzerland, UK, Germany. I have friends including in but limited to Holland, Denmark, Spain, Austria, Brazil, South Africa, New Zealand, Japan, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Canada, Philippines, South Korea, Italy, Poland, Russia. No one calls it the Chinese or Wuhan Virus. The G20 laughed the Trump administration in their face and refused to sign a declaration that contained Wuhan Virus.

Pack your Strawmans and go back to sleep.

.

Interesting. My father’s second wife is from Chengdu and they didn’t call it Wuhan Virus. My mother in law from Hong Kong. They don’t either.

So why don’t you check your sources and tell me what they are. Let me guess Fox? Breitbart?

.

Mate exactly my point. You’re not even based here. I directly work for a Chinese company and my role encompasses Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai. You can look them up: mmoser.com. No one calls it the China Virus or the Wuhan Virus. The publications below all say Coronavirus and mention China as the location. The China Coronavirus or the Coronavirus originating from China. It’s still Coronavirus and not Chinese Virus.

Pack your biases, switch of Fox News, keep calm and go to bed.

.

You understand adjectives? Learn Grammar. It says Chinese Coronavirus. Chinese ist the origin.

I sometimes read CNN. I mostly read
South China Morning Post
Frankfurter Allgemeine
Der Spiegel
Sueddeutsche Zeitung
Le Monde
Les Echos
The Age
The Guardian
ABC (Australia)
Liberation
Telegraph
Financial Time
Economist
The Atlantic
NY Times
China Daily
sydney Morning Herald

Go back to school and learn about adjectives and why they are capitalised when we are dealing with states or countries

.

Nope just sticking to the facts. Why? Are you afraid of being called a racist?

.

Reverting to swear words for arguments. Pretty narrow if you ask me.

You’re so excited about your biases that you’re incapable to read. It says Coronavirus from China, China Coronavirus etc. it’s still Coronavirus and China is the place of origin because at the time it was only in China.

Stop making a fool of yourself and go back to bed

LOL! Holy Shit! You're so blinded by your own stupidity. Well, duh, it originated from China that's why everyone was referring to it as "China" "Chinese" "Wuhan" Coronavirus. But, when Trump refers to it as such, all the sudden it's now a bad thing to say. Talk about bias.
