First Impressions

If you can't stand wiggly ports, this unit is for you. These are about the tightest USB-A ports I have ever seen anywhere. The unit feels solid, including the retracting USB-C cables.

For a charger that doesn't have AC, 140 W is a decent amount of charging power. I noticed this when I initially attempted to charge a PixelMob Pro from a regular USB port, using a USB-A to USB-C cable. The unit didn't charge. The JOYROOM PODIX was able to charge it at 32-34 W, according to its LCD readout.

And I don't believe I've mentioned the two retractable USB-C cables enough already! They're quite handy, and even more so if you use the included anti-slip magnetic silicone pad, which adheres strongly to your desktop without leaving goop on the surface. This stops the cube from slipping, allowing you to pull or retract the USB-C cables with one hand. Sort of. The cube does lurch forward a bit if you are not gentle. 

Sometimes, it's the little things…

140 W Charges Quickly

Photographers can charge their phone, laptop, and camera batteries simultaneously. And the retractable USB-C cables mean two fewer cords to pack. JOYROOM claims that you can charge a MacBook Pro from 0 to 50% in about 25 minutes with the 140 W charging unit. 

And it keeps cool. GaN (gallium nitride) means that the cube runs more efficiently. More power, less heat, and a smaller footprint.

The Display: What's Useful and What's Useless

The 1.54" LCD color screen displays three modes: total power output across all ports, per-port power draw, and animated emoji. A double-tap changes the emoji. A triple-tap rotates the display orientation. A long press powers the unit down.

The per-port power monitoring is the only genuinely useful function. It tells you exactly how much each connected device is drawing in real time, which lets you make informed decisions about what's plugged in where. 

The total wattage mode is a nice at-a-glance number, but not something most users will check regularly.

The random emoji serves no useful purpose that I can see. However, if you want a charger that is cute, look no further. It might have been interesting if JOYROOM had used this for meaningful emojis instead. For example, a sweaty, uncomfortable face if the unit is running hot, a smiley face to offer fast-charge confirmation, a face that looked alarmed when a port was being overloaded, and so forth. This could have been cute…and useful.

This is, in fact, what I was expecting it to do when I plugged it in, since when nothing is plugged in, it produces a sleepy face emitting "ZZZZZ." This is actually useful. However, when you plug in a device, the face changes to one blowing bubbles, holding a colorful pinwheel, or tooting on a party favor.

One genuinely clever touch: tip the cube on any side, and all three display modes reorient themselves automatically.

Power Allocation

One thing to understand before buying: plug in a single device, and the PODIX delivers its full power. As mentioned, a 16" MacBook Pro can be charged from 0 to 50% in around 25 minutes. To put it another way, 140 W is the total output. Think of it like dividing a cake among up to five friends instead of eating it by yourself.

But like most other chargers in this class, if you add more devices, the math changes fast. With all five ports in use simultaneously, power allocation drops to 20 W each for the two retractable cables, 80 W on the front USB-C port, and 15 W shared between the two USB-A ports. In other words, your laptop is no longer getting anywhere near full speed.

This is not a flaw unique to the PODIX. It's how all multi-port chargers work. But it's good to know. The PODIX handles the allocation automatically and intelligently, but even with 140 W of total power, it gets spread out faster than you might think.

Final Thoughts

The two retractable USB-C cables are one of my favorite aspects of this charger, as you can probably tell by now. There is something inherently cool about pulling out a cable or two when it's needed, and then giving it a gentle tug to make it disappear when you are not using it. At 31.5 inches (80 cm), they are reasonably long, although I could foresee instances in which they might be too short. For my setup, however, the length is fine. If the cables break, replacement won't be simple. After all, they're built in and non-removable. Thankfully, they feel sturdy. Regardless, it genuinely helps with desk organization and clutter.

The display, cute emoji aside, is genuinely useful. It tells you at a glance whether the charger is actually fast-charging. And it shows you exactly how many watts your device is pulling. 

The magnetic base is a great idea, although in real life, the cube can lurch forward. I found myself wishing that the magnets were a little stronger. I would recommend a gentle touch when pulling on the retractable cables.

This is not made for someone who needs AC outlets. No AC outlets means no coffee makers, desk lamps, or anything that needs a standard plug. Also, while it's not pitched as a travel charger, at 466 g it's heavier than most dedicated travel options. However, its cube-sized footprint makes it worth considering for road trips or domestic travel where weight isn't a dealbreaker. In my opinion, it's too heavy for international travel.

At $109 list (often $89.99 as of this writing), the PODIX is priced competitively for what it delivers. Dual retractable cables and a live power display are features you won't find bundled together at this price point in many competing devices, making it a reasonable value for desk-focused users who want both power and organization in one compact unit.

Overall, the JOYROOM JR-TRD01 PODIX 140W 5-Port Desktop GaN Charger achieves what it sets out to do, which is to reduce clutter in a fun, useful cube, allowing you to run a laptop and various devices on your desk without a lot of crisscrossing cables.
