Pacific Northwest Coast Artist Andy Everson asked me to document a costume he had painted for his exhibition "Like". We wanted a dramatic look and shot at first light at the waters edge. This image was the opening visual of the exhibition and catalogue. I used two small speedlights in softboxes ganged up close together just out of frame to fill in the inky blackness of the shorefront at 6AM. With my camera on a low tripod I popped the flash via Pocket Wizard and dragged the shutter for two seconds to fill in the sky and background lights. In this frame Andy stepped forward suddenly giving the shadowy blur around his head and arms. This 'surreal' look made it the winning image for both of us.
